Synopsis

We are going to create a digital solution that makes the user reconsider everyday choices on travelling and movement. We want to include gamification, as well as an educative factor that makes saving money and improving health and fitness fun.

Project aim

Our aim is to create is app where you enter a location you want to travel to. You are then offered a variety of travel options e.g. drive, walk or take public transport. Similar to Google maps each option will tell you how long it will take to travel to the location but it will also tell you how much each option will cost, and how large the carbon footprint will be. We could also add a fitness element to this. In the form of a steps or calorie counter. We could also include a map feature that shows where your friends are travelling to, in turn promoting car-pooling. We will also add a feature where you can earn a discount off your next bus fare with certain companies if you hit a certain amount of steps or cycle a particular distance over a week.

By making the better choices for your wallet, body and planet you’ll receive points and level up. You can also add your friends and compete to see who was the biggest saver every month.

Background

Some apps that are similar to ours are… Pokémon Go, Zombies! Run, and NASA’s Earth Now.

Pokémon Go: Pokémon Go make users exercise by engaging them in capturing Pokémon by walking to locations in real life. This inspired people to walk/cycle to locations rather than drive which had multiple health benefits.

Zombies, Run!: This game engages you in exercise by telling you a compelling story through audio where you must run to certain areas to "collect" items to survive the zombie apocalypse. It is a fitness app that uses the storyline of a post-apocalyptic world where zombies are everywhere. It's another example of gamification that makes exercise fun, and more appealing than driving or taking public transport.

NASA's Earth Now: NASA's app Earth Now shows the earth's vital signs such as air temperature, carbon monoxide & carbon dioxide levels, sea levels, soil moisture, ozone, and water vapour in real time. I think this app is a good example of an app that would make people cut down on fossil fuel use and driving out of pure guilt. Seeing climate change visualised in real time is a good way for people to consider walking or cycling short distances.

Our application will be a better alternative to these individually by taking elements from them all, and putting them in the one app. Our app will also include travelling times and costs, it will reduce carbon footprint, and it will have real life benefits such as discounts on bus/train fares if you reach a certain amount of steps per week.

Objectives

·       Decrease customers cost of travel

·       Increase health benefits for customers

·       Make customers travel more efficiently

·       Decrease people’s carbon footprint

·       Make people more educated about climate change

·       An app people will regularly use (keep users consistently engaged)

·       Make an app that’s fun to use!

Final Testing - Manus

Overview: In our last class meeting with Phil. We brought up that we were unsure of the customisable interests element to our app. Phil recommended that we do some last minute testing to see if people liked it. Participants: Sammy: Female 38 Joan: Female 61 Neil: Male 58 Rónán: Male 23 What were they shown: I explained the basic concept of the app to them and showed them my scribbles of the initial "which of these elements interest you" survey that would pop-up once you started the app for the first time. I got them to choose their interests and showed them their specific screens. We then went into some of the other features in depth. What did they think: Initially everyone liked the idea of the how personalised it was. Although Joan found it to be a bit confusing. After proceeding to the next screen the majority of opinions changed as the users wanted to see all of the. information. Not just the ones they had chosen. I tested the idea of the options being ranked but I realis...
